Who We Are

The Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) is an accredited Member of INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTITIONERS OF NIGERIA (IEPN) established by Act No 41 of 2023 of the National Assembly. WAMASON is a professional organization incorporated (CAC/IT/No. 18515) in 2005 envisioned to protect public health, control pollution, promote recycling and waste to energy.

WAMASON is the Waste and Resource Management Practitioners arm of IEPN, and is in the Council to ensure the development of Waste and Resource Management Industry, and the practice in Nigeria through;

  • Development of appropriate human capital through training and certification
  • Building consensus with the Government and creating public awareness
  • Development of practice standards
  • Research and development of best practices

WAMASON has membership all over the Federation cutting across both the public and the private sector including the academia, and has established over fourteen State Councils’ offices in the Country.

Code of Conduct and Ethics

Duty-of-Care Principle

  • Members shall conduct their activities and operations in accordance with best practices to ensure environmental integrity.
  • Members shall implore their knowledge and skill in waste management for the sustenance of ecological resources and public safety.
  • Members shall endeavour to enhance the body of knowledge in Waste and Resources Management.

Competence Principle

  • It is mandatory for members to continuously develop their professional and personal qualities during their career through maintenance, improvement and acquisition of knowledge and skill required for their practice.
  • Members shall meet the minimum CPD rating to sustain their membership status.
  • Members are required to encourage juniors to professionally develop and when necessary grant juniors internship.

Integrity Principle

  • Members shall undertake activities and operation they have required capacity and competence to execute.
  • Members shall be responsible, transparent and objective in all their relationship with: members, clients and public.
  • Members shall at all times conduct themselves in professional manner that will not bring the Society to disrepute.
  • It is compulsory for members to participate in appropriate Society activities and such, shall be to enhance the development of the Society.

History

The Society was registered in 1999 by a group of concerned Private Refuse and Sewage Service Providers in Rivers States under the leadership of Arc. R. M. Ossai as SOLID WASTE ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (SWAN). The focus was to propagate good practice in municipal waste collection and Sewage disposal all over Nigeria and above all to affiliate to ISWA.

Attempts were made to sell this idea to the Nigerian public and Government. In line with this drive, SWAN visited National and State Assemblies, and made presentation to various House Committees on Environment. From the engagement of the Nigerian public, it was resolved to increase the coverage of the Society.

Following the need to cover all categories of waste and aspects of waste management, the Association was re-registered in April 2005 (CAC/IT/NO18515) as WASTES MANAGEMENT SOCIETY OF NIGERIA (WAMASON).

WAMASON is incorporated in Nigeria as a non-profit, non-government professional organization with a clear conviction to transform waste and resource management culture in the country.

Our Objectives

The objective of the Society is to generally promote public health, resource recovery, and protect the environment through the following:

Professional Standards

Ensure that members or organizations working or associated with Waste and Resource Management conduct their operations in accordance with best practice and standard ethics of the Industry.

Expert Guidance

Providing expert opinion on waste and resource management to Nigerian public, develop technical guidance and promote competition through the spread of best practice, exchange of knowledge and experience in planning, investigation, collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of all streams of wastes.

Capacity Building

Build public consciousness and develop members on Waste Management through industrial training scheme, professional publications, conferences, seminars and exhibitions.

Research & Development

Promote scientific research and development in matters in or related to waste and resource management with the desired coordination between our country and others.
